Trekking in Genoa: 3 hikes from the city center

Genoa's highlands are rich in footpaths that cross forests and ancient mule tracks, providing wonderful views of the sea and surrounding hills.

The particular conformation of the land makes it possible to reach the path directly from the center of Genoa, venturing out to discover ancient aqueducts, admire the remains of ancient city fortifications, and explore the hillside hamlets of the city.

The trails are moderately easy, although some steeper sections may require a minimum of training. You are also reminded to approach the hikes wearing appropriate footwear and carrying a good supply of water.

Let's discover the most beautiful treks in Genoa.

Discover the Historic Aqueduct

Genoa's historic aqueduct is an imposing structure dating back to Roman times that was used to supply water to the city back in the day. Its proximity to the center makes it perfect for walking in all seasons.

The loop is about 10 km for a total of 4 hours of walking. It does not present any particular difficulties except for some inclines due to the lay of the land.

The route of obvious historical interest, presents areas of great naturalistic charm, as it crosses oak and chestnut forests, as well as areas characterized by typical Mediterranean scrub.

It is recommended to start from Cavassolo locality in the upper Bisagno Valley. Starting from Hotel Astoria, it can be reached in about 30 minutes by bus 715 or 725.

Trekking the Forts of Genoa

The ring path of Genoa's Forts is one of the city's most popular hikes. Built between the 18th and 19th centuries to defend the city, today only a few ruins remain of the ancient forts. Learn about the history of the walls and the belvedere.

This route is also about 10 km for 4 hours of walking, with a more pronounced elevation gain of about 460 m. The difficulty is medium, and it is highly recommended to wear appropriate shoes and clothing and carry sufficient water and food. The trail is mostly on open path, so it is easily exposed to sun, wind and rain. Check the weather before setting out.

The trail leads to the discovery of Fort Sperone, Fort Puin, Fort Fratello Minore, of which only a few ruins remain, and Fort Diamante, the best preserved.

We recommend starting from the Righi Astronomical Observatory, which can be reached by bus starting from the Hotel Astoria, or by the Zecca-Righi Funicular, departing from Largo Zecca (reachable in about 10 minutes by bus from the Hotel Astoria).

Alternatively, it is possible to take the trail from Trensasco, which can be reached by the historic Trenino di Casella, departing from Piazza Manin (reachable in 10-15 minutes by bus from Hotel Astoria), or by bus.

Hiking among the "creuze" of Sant'Ilario

A simpler route that can be easily modulated according to one's physical fitness is the one that winds through the hamlet of Sant'Ilario. The "creuze" are the ancient town bricks, built in past eras to connect the sea with the hillside hamlets.

In this area it is possible to freely explore the pedestrian streets that wind in a labyrinthine fashion between typical Genoese houses and strips planted with olive groves: on one side the boundless view of the sea, on the other the mountains. The more trained can also take the path that leads to the summit of Mount Giugo.

It is possible to reach the hamlet of Sant'Ilario by bus in about 45 minutes starting from Hotel Astoria.
