Located in Genoa's Old Port, not far from the Aquarium, the Galata Maritime Museum traces the city's naval history with its original exhibits.
The visit to the Maritime Museum is suitable for both adults and children, who can admire works of art, shipboard instruments, ancient nautical charts, ship reconstructions and multimedia installations. Not to be missed the panoramic terrace located at the top of the building.
Currently, the Galata Museum in Genoa is the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean.
Collections
The museum hub was inaugurated in 2004 and includes 4 floors of exhibits. It is located inside the Galata Palace, the oldest building in the Old Port Dock. Genoa's pride and joy, the Maritime Museum houses more than 4,000 exhibits and a tour route that winds its way through reproductions, ancient artworks, the Open Air Museum, the panoramic terrace, and the nearby submarine.
The collections are divided into thematic areas, among which we can find:
the naval history of Genoa
the Atlas and Globes room
the Silver Hall
nautical science, storms and shipwrecks exhibits
realistic reproductions of ancient vessels
the raft of Ambrogio Fogar, an italian navigator, explorer and writer
the MEM (Memory and Migrations), dedicated to our ancestors migration
the Mirador terrace
Visiting the museum with children
Genoa’s Galata Maritime Museum also provides child-friendly routes, complete with games and interactive activities. Children will be able to follow Geronimo Stilton's map and discover the city's naval history through simplified explanations by the lovable character.
Sure to entertain the little ones is the MEM exhibit, in which they can retrace the migratory journeys of our ancestors, and a visit inside the submarine.
The Submarine Nazario Sauro
Step inside a real submarine by wearing the protective gear provided at the ticket office and ask for the audio guide. The submarine Nazario Sauro, docked at the pier not far from the entrance to the Naval Museum, was built for the Navy in 1976 and decommissioned in 2002. Today it is possible to discover the living conditions of the sailors and how to use the ship's instrumentation.
Tickets and visiting hours
The Galata Maritime Museum is open all winter from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the week and from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on holidays, and during summer every day from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
